Acne Q & A

What are the types of acne?

Acne is a skin condition that affects the skin’s surface, usually appearing on the face, back, buttocks, or chest. There are many types of acne, including:

Blackheads

Blackheads are open clogged pores. They appear dark because of how light reflects on the clogged pore, not because the pore is filled with dirt.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are closed clogged pores.

Papules

Papules are small red bumps on the surface of the skin.

Pimples

Pimples are papules filled with pus.

Cystic lesions

A cystic lesion is a pus-filled blemish that forms under the skin, causing pain.

Nodules

Nodules are large, solid, and painful cystic lesions that form under the skin.

What causes acne?

You develop acne when dead skin cells get trapped in your pores. This usually occurs when your skin overproduces sebum — an oil that coats and protects your skin.

Normally, your skin sheds dead skin cells as they travel to the surface of the pore. However, the excess oil makes these cells too heavy, trapping them in the pores. Bacteria from the surface of your skin may fall into the pore, causing red, swollen, pus-filled blemishes.

You can develop acne at any age. However, the hormonal fluctuations that occur during puberty trigger an overproduction of sebum, which is why acne is so common in teens.

When should I see a dermatologist for my acne?

The Mohave Dermatology team recommends you schedule an appointment if you have acne and at-home care fails to clear up your blemishes. Whether mild or severe, untreated acne can lead to acne scars.

The team provides a personalized treatment plan to clear up your blemishes and reduce your risk of further skin damage.

What treatments can clear up my acne?

No single treatment works for all cases of acne. And it can take time to find the right combination of products, medications, or treatments to improve the look of your skin.

Some of the treatments the Mohave Dermatology team may recommend include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide topical medication
  • Retin-A® for whiteheads, blackheads, and papules
  • Accutane®: Medication for severe acne
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Chemical peels

Mohave Dermatology also offers skin care products from EltaMD® and CeraVe® to treat acne.
